Mechanics

Mechanics are responsible for preparing the bike for the race and for repairs during the event. This can range from simply replacing the fairing damaged in a fall, to more complicated tasks such as changing a clutch or gearbox.

The mechanics are also in charge of one of the key in-race operations – refuelling. The 24 Heures Motos is won on the track but may also be lost in the pits. Four mechanics at a time can work directly on the machine during a pit stop. Mechanics are specially trained, and each has a specific role to play when the bike comes in:

  • one person mans the fire extinguisher, from the moment the motorcycle enters the pits, until it leaves;
  • two refuel, with one holding the fuel line while the other opens and closes the tap;
  • four change the wheels. This operation requires perfectly honed skill;
  • two mechanics are allowed to push the machine (unless the starter is used), with the rider on the motorcycle, to get it back onto the track.
